Mother’s Day is celebrated in the United States, on the second Sunday in May. The origin of Mother’s day dates back to 1870 when Julia Ward Howe issued a “Mothers Day Proclamation” as “a call for women to join in the support of disarmament”. In 1908, Anna Jarvis of West Virginia created the current Mother’s Day Holiday. This was a way to make her own mother’s dream, of making a celebration for all mothers, come true. Finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday. Mother’s Day, in the United States, is one of the biggest days for sales of “flowers and greeting cards”. In the past it has also been one of the highest attendance days for Church worshipers. Many people celebrate with carrying carnations or wearing corsages or boutonnières, pink if their mother is living and white if she is deceased.

It’s early warning time! The spring holidays of Easter and Passover are almost upon us. .

Easter is the springtime holiday marking the rebirth of Jesus and the renewal of the Christian faith.It is a blessed time for the faithful to celebrate the life, death nd resurrection of the Savior… and a magical time for children to enjoy chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chicks and jellybean-filled Easter eggs.

Easter will be celebrated on April 8th, 2012. Greek/Orthodox Easter will also be celebrated on Sunday, April 15, 2012.

Passover is the 8 day observance commemorating the freedom and exodus of the Israelites (Jewish slaves) from Egypt during the reign of the Pharaoh Ramses II.

A time of family gatherings and lavish meals called Seders, the story of Passover is retold through the reading of the Haggadah. With its special foods, songs, and customs, the Seder is the focal point of the Passover celebration.

Passover begins on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nissan. As the Jewish day begins at sundown the night before, for the year 2012, the first night of Passover will be April 06th.

Funeral flowers are are showing a strong comeback in this difficult economy. The Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., with two locations in the Rochester, N.Y., suburbs, ran a local newspaper advertisements praising sympathy flowers: “As an important component in the funeral industry, flowers are appreciated as a bright and welcome diversion, around which conversation can focus during a time of sorrow. Moreover, when asked to identify the gifts and memorials that helped them most in their time of grief, mourners singled out flowers (and plants) and sympathy cards as the most meaningful. The gift of flowers shows respect for the deceased and loving support for the family, especially when one cannot attend the funeral in person.”

A behavioral research study conducted at Harvard reveals flowers feed compassion and chase away anxiety and worries. Previous behavioral research by Rutgers University also found that the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed.”

RECYCLE VASES

This time of year, people are furiously cleaning out their closets, cupboards, basements, garages and storage area, in an effort to minimize and shrink their possessions and gain more space.

Many will find vase and containers too good to throw away but alas …. just too much to keep. Don’t agonize…. RECYCLE!!!
