Funeral flowers are are showing a strong comeback in this difficult economy. The Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., with two locations in the Rochester, N.Y., suburbs, ran a local newspaper advertisements praising sympathy flowers: “As an important component in the funeral industry, flowers are appreciated as a bright and welcome diversion, around which conversation can focus during a time of sorrow. Moreover, when asked to identify the gifts and memorials that helped them most in their time of grief, mourners singled out flowers (and plants) and sympathy cards as the most meaningful. The gift of flowers shows respect for the deceased and loving support for the family, especially when one cannot attend the funeral in person.”

A behavioral research study conducted at Harvard reveals flowers feed compassion and chase away anxiety and worries. Previous behavioral research by Rutgers University also found that the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed.”

RECYCLE VASES

This time of year, people are furiously cleaning out their closets, cupboards, basements, garages and storage area, in an effort to minimize and shrink their possessions and gain more space.

Many will find vase and containers too good to throw away but alas …. just too much to keep. Don’t agonize…. RECYCLE!!!

When our customers pay with a credit card the numbers are not stored on our in store server. Any time a staff member views an order only the last 4 numbers of the card are visible. When a returning customer is asked if they want to use a credit card that is on file only the last 4 numbers are visible to central square florist employees.

The following letter was written to SAF (The Society of American Florists) recently. The letter was recently published by Floral Managment Magazine. A funeral director’s wife expresses her appreciation for sympathy/funeral flowers.

Quiet Ambassadors of Love

“As a funeral director’s wife, I have often stood by others in times of loss and grief. When confusion and pain run so deep, words are intrusive and unwelcome – hearts are too full for anything but flowers. God’s beautiful bouquets send thoughtfulness, reassurance and strength with their special perfume and color. They tell those who are left, ‘we love you.’

Flowers are given ‘in memory,’ but they’re a gift for the living! I tell people, ‘Send flowers as often as you are able, and know that they will reflect your love – especially at a funeral home.’ The saddest thing is a funeral without so much as a tiny bud vase whispering that someone cares.”

Bobbie Nelson strikes a chord with this note. She tells us all how important funeral flowers are. Even when the famiyl requestes a donation, the request does Not mean not to send flowers. You can often split the difference; $50 for flowers and $50 for the donation.

Flowers mean so much to so many. When singer Johnny Cash’s wife, June Carter died; Johnny Cash asked people to send flowers as she loved them so.
